I am a very handsome mancow.Morbid Curiosity is a good guild name. Japanese poetry is fun :) I've avoided writing things so as not to upset people, but hell, this is my journal... for me. Also.. languages often are taught wrong. For adults anyway it should be a healthy balance between grammar logic and creative exploration (poetry writing/word games). Adults do NOT learn automatically as children do.. and their analytical minds should be taken into account. Analytical does not mean memorization. Grammar provides the kind of in-depth analysis that an adult mind is most familiar with. Word play takes into account the value of fun in the memorization process. Language is a creative medium, despite how many people treat it.. most people who speak a language can spontaneously produce many different ways of saying something. Something which piques the imagination of a student (adult or child) will allow them to remember what they are doing and actively pursue it on their own. Why not let adults produce silly sentences on their homework? Encouraging things like "You have a very big sister" is bound to embed the grammatical pattern into the student's head whereas "You have a very big house" is less likely. Seriously.. I try to turn every grammatical structure we learn into an expression of my love for eating cats on a daily basis. How could I forget that? Truly astounding last names, Episode 1: Cabingabang Seriously. It's a last name. (others i've seen are Sinthasomphone(sp?) and Laohaskthaworn; the first being the victim of a serial killer and the second being the name of a person who sent me my invitation letter to Classical High School many, many years ago... yes.. yes i did memorize their last name :P) Two jobs loom on the horizon... I may get both. I think this would be a good thing. :3 MONNIES Visitor arrives 17th March!! Current Mood: busy | | Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009 | | 11:00 am |
Who doesn't like Terry Gilliam? Reading about this just gets more and more fascinating. I'm for sure going to go see it.... out January 8th 2010! Apparently in addition to Heath Ledger dying during production, their producer died just after the end and Mr. Gilliam got his back broken by a car o_O Apparently also, when the three new actors, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law were brought in to be alternate forms of Heath Ledger's character they gave all the money they would have received to his daughter who got left out of his money somehow. All these people just sound really cool.. heh. Not to make it sound trite.. :P "The production was beset by further bad luck when producer William Vince died one week after shooting was done, and while on post-production Gilliam himself was hit by a car and broke his back. Gilliam recalled: "So I thought, it was third time lucky - they just didn't get me. They got the star, the producer and they were going for the director and the fuckers failed on the last one. Whoever they are...". "They were going for the trinity [...] That would have been a tidy end to the whole thing. But they didn't kill me. I'm stuck here to tell the tale."" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Imaginarium_of_Doctor_ParnassusApparently it's getting released first in New York and Los Angeles on christmas >:( Should do it in Honolulu too *nod* Current Mood: calm | | Friday, December 18th, 2009 | | 8:44 am |
Okay.. after thinking about it somewhat, I've decided that there at two main.. dialects? for real-time communication (well.. hm. we'll just say "informal" communication because these types also appear in journal/blog/emails/forum posts)-- the Educated and the Uneducated. They of course effect eachother, but the logic behind the production is based on one or the other of two reasons which are also the namesakes i've assigned. A major difference is that Educated is more likely to use punctuation to either clarify pronunciation based on traditional/literary english language rules or to indicate the relation the new form has to it. And this is where i get distracted and walk off.. Also... needs to be said: Current Mood: discontent | | Thursday, December 17th, 2009 | | 10:25 pm |
Every Day Is a Summer's Day
Finished with my woman 'cause she couldn't help me with my mind People think I'm insane because I am frowning all the time All day long I think of things but nothing seems to satisfy Think I'll lose my mind if I don't find something to pacify Can you help me occupy my brain? Oh yeah I need someone to show me the things in life that I can't find I can't see the things that make true happiness, I must be blind Make a joke and I will sigh and you will laugh and I will cry Happiness I cannot feel and love to me is so unreal And so as you hear these words telling you now of my state I tell you to enjoy life I wish I could but it's too late Infrequent postings these days. Numbers of posts decrease with either the appearance of highly interesting things or the lack of them. It's amazing how difficult it can be to do what you want. And more difficult to find what that is? Though, generally, I think I know what that is... just I can't have it. As per usual. It's actually kinda humorous :P Obtained for free: 2 pairs of shorts that are exactly the kind i wanted/needed and also in my size... exactly 1 picture book souvenir of ROMA 1 graphic techniques book 1 perfect condition Miss Piggy Covergirl (not the makeup, thankfully.. think magazine covers) 1981 calendar o_o astounding. Complete with centerfold. Woo! 1 book on pacific island art.. so far not nearly as interesting as i had hoped CONQUERED: 3 final exams 1 mostly imaginary country Obtention. In very pleasant news, I have recently associated myself with a boy. A very kind and sweet one at that. With any luck, I will manage to stay sane enough to enjoy this fact. I wish to be asleep. For most of the time. I will go write a list now. Measuring a summer's day I only finds it slips away to grey The hours they bring me pain. At the Art building at UHM, there is a 3-tiered table with a sign saying "FREE STORE" at the top. Today I obtained some label stickers, a small ribbon and a little booklet on Calligraphy that came with a felt-tipped calligraphy pen set originally. A pen set that I'm pretty sure I owned at one time. I recognize the book. So the stickers will be used to seal envelopes, the bow to wrap some present or other and the calligraphy well.. was wanting some calligraphy practice. I am making fake cookies! To be done they will have to be baked. :) This is pretty awesome. Baking fake cookies. They are going to be christmas presents for the more immediate members of the tea club^^ Fascinating things are happening all around us. It's possible that I actually am negatively effected by the new location/change. There *are* a lot of very nice cats here though. And by "nice" i mean that they're cats... they're all feral. This band called Mastodon was introduced to me fairly recently. At first it was almost entirely uninteresting, except for a few neat little guitar bits. But the more I listen to it, the more awesome it seems. Good deal, I think! The below-mentioned song being the best and neat parts at the beginning of Crack the Skye and in the middle of The Czar. Probably the best one is in the middle of The Czar... at one point a few layers of guitar all come together in the most fantastic blend of sound. Probably it's partly so awesome because of the contrast with the more plain sounds around it.. but, wow. Kinda want to introduce it to my dad to see what he thinks.. he'd appreciate something like that if he can get over it being metal. Okay.. after some irritation i've discovered how to enter non-keyboard characters in Pidgin. Instead of the alt+___ that windows uses, it actually uses unicode (a cool thing), unfortunately, this means instead of the nice simple number things from before, i have to learn unicode :P (not a cool thing). so now i have to hit: ctrl+shift+u (but you can let go of the u) and it shows a little u with the underline like that.. then you enter the hex for the unicode value you want to display. important ones to know! ----------------------- ä - 00E4 (alt+0228) å - 00E5 (alt+0229) ö - 00F6 (alt+0246) ü - 00FC (alt+0252) ß - 00DF (alt+0223) ṹ - 1E79 Too bad most of them don't display! http://www.unicodetables.com/----- In other news! This dictionary is amazing and awesome!! http://jisho.org/I highly recommend it to anyone with interest in japanese! ----- Plot: Luau! Tiana kindly provided me with various Hawaii-related books as entertainment during my stay, so i've selected a book entitled "Hawaiian Cookbook". For the most part it seems like Hawaiian food reflects the large asian populations which migrated there. Unique aspects include large amounts of pineapple, coconut, orange and banana in nearly every dish in some way. Frying and deep-frying seem to be pretty common also. So i've chosen a few tasty looking recipes and will transcribe them here! Avocado Soup ------------ 3 ripe avocados, peeled, seeded and cubed 3 cups chicken broth 1 tsp. lemon juice 1 slice fresh ginger root 1 clove garlic, minced dash of salt and fresh pepper 1.5 cups medium cream 0.5 cup heavy cream, whipped 0.5 cup macadamia nuts, chopped coarse In an electric blender, combine first six ingredients and puree until smooth and creamy. Turn into a large bowl and add medium cream. Stir and combine well. Chill thoroughly. When ready to serve, ladle into individual small bowl and top with a spoooful of whipped cream. Sprinkle with macadamia nuts and serve. Polynesian Beef, Chicken or Shrimp Fondue ---------------------------------------- - 3 lbs. sirloin steak, chicken or shrimp Marinade: 1 cup soy sauce 0.33 cup brown sugar 2 tbs. sherry 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 slices fresh ginger root, minced 1 scallion, chopped fine dash of fresh pepper 3 cups oil for fondue pot Cut steak or chicken into one-inch cubes. Shrimp should be left whole, cleaned and deveined. Combine marinade ingredients and pour over cubes of beef, chicken or whole shrimp. Toss and turn to coat well. Marinate overnight in refrigerator, or 3-4 hours at room temperature. Drain and arrange attractively on a large serving tray with salad greens, parlsey or watercress. Fill the fondue pot 0.5 full of oil. Heat to about 375F (you can test oil with a small cube of bread; if it cooks brown and crisp in half a minute, the oil is hot enough for fonduing). Adjust burner so that oil will remain at the boiling point throughout the meal. Each guest spears a cube of meat, chicken or whole shrimp with the fondue fork or a skewer and dunks it into the hot oil, cooking it to his taste-- 10 to 12 seconds for rare and almost a minute for well done. Serve with hot rice and green salad. 6-10 servings. Current Mood: lonely | | 8:33 pm |
I saw an article asking the question "When did America become a place where the only things worth doing are those things that make money?". A good question! It is a very sad thing and makes life feel very worthless to think that one's only purpose is to produce income. That's actually not a bad thing to point at as a root for this country's troubles (which few can see and fewer consider troubles). In thinking about possible reasons for this I came to this country's history-- originally it was formed by people who sought freedom from communites which were oppressive to them for various reasons... and also for seeking riches and fame. Later, as the colonies and country became more powerful and wealthy people came here to seek ways of making money for their families. Basically, most of the people who came here came with profit in mind, perhaps not in a greedy way originally, but certainly the value of money remained even if the original motivation faded with generations. Is it any wonder that profiteering is so prevalent? Not really, i think. At work the idea of overpackaging products came up with a customer. We agreed that it is highly wasteful and pointless. And it was also mentioned that other countries (specifically Scandinavian ones) are much more focused on having functional and practical items produced. I would feel like my purpose in life is fulfilled if i could somehow convince a sizeable number of people that the function of an item is far more important than the item itself. A nice idea came up when I was working on a project with a group for my Dialects of American English class. We studied the vocabulary of surfers... and in the end we decided that it revealed that while surfers require surfboards to perform their sport they do not coddle them or value them as sacred objects.. they are the means to participate in their pastime and are treated as such. An old board that doesn't work anymore is no longer used. A broken board is repaired. It's not an issue. It's funny how difficult i find it to describe concisely this idea! Currently I'm at Tiana's house babysitting a small sleeping child :) I've brought along headphones to listen to Sonata Arctica because they are <3 and i've brought along my sketchbook and pens with the intent of continuing designs for stationery.. though i'm once again shying away from it. Finally, i've brought along my DS for the purpose of doing something in the dark when i spend the night in the very nice airstream trailer in the backyard^^ I've been looking forward to an opportunity to stay in it since i cleaned it a few weeks ago. Finally, it has arrived~! I propose that if a person wishes destruction for the planet and the human race, they should have 3 or more children. Further strain land and food! Ratchet up the need for useless jobs and the production of souless junk! You see on the highway the person who scoots between two cars in a faster lane instead of waiting until the nice open spot a minute away? They make everyone else slower. Everyone behind them now has to move slower to decrease chances of crashing. So selfish that they can't wait one minute. It's so much better to make everyone else get stuck going slow. Ooh... sitting on this twisted angle is damaging my back xD it's being painful already. I'm sorta starting to wish i brought my book along xD I bought a copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. It was 25 cents at the URI library. Very nice. So far it's a very intriguing book.. mostly because it seems to have no driving plot yet remains interesting in its thoughts and interactions between characters. I was dragged through several chapters though i had intended to only read one! It's nice to read something like that.. effortless and fun... like an escalator! Or other conveyor-belt-type thing. Yet another successful day of biking! Lovely and sunny and pleasant. Leah and I were hoping to go sailing with her father today, it's absolutely perfect weather, but i have to work at 2pm and that wouldn't give us much time, sadly.. we're going to try again on Thursday, but they say it's going to be bad weather for sailing. I say wait and see, though i trust a sailor-type more than i trust anyone else on the weather. I successfully placed my hood in such a way that it makes a good sail! It puffs up nicely and gives me good.. uh.. drag, i guess. But it seems like a such a good idea! Now i just need to figure out how to get it to do that while i'm biking in the direction of the wind. Unfortunately i think that would involve hiring either a wind god or a large fan... maybe a hurricane... that's kinda like both in one. My tuberculosis test seems to be doing fine. It has all but disappeared and this is only the next day. Tomorrow they're going to look at it and see if i'm tuberculine. I suspect i'm not :P It was only $35 for the test which is less than i had expected it to be. Great! The mulberries seem to be ripe/ripening at uri by the biological sciences building and its husk of a former self. Tomorrow i will bring a container to capture them. Hopefully there will be enough to make a small tart or something.. it turns out that tarts and thing with mulberries are quite tasty if not extremely sugary. Larlar.... still 70 because i'm not levelling much, but i've got nearly 200 inscription. Not too bad^^ Oooh.. also, while at uri yesterday i found and spoke with professor george... he's going to be in hawai'i during the first week that i'm there! coool.. so i'm going to email him and we will go out for lunch! It is amusing to say "oh.. okay, give me a call and we'll have lunch in hawai'i!" haha.. mmm... speaking of lunch. I also took some time to explore in the new biological sciences building today. It's huge and initially quite offensive to me because it blocked my former view from the stairs nearby. It's by far the best view uri has to offer, except perhaps nearly the same view to be had from a slightly more obscured place in a disused parking lot in a useless place. But! The inside was very neat and has that modern metal and wood look to it-- very clean and refined looking. The floors are some sort of black stone with diagonal patterns parallel to eachother in such a way that i'm inclined to follow one until it gets too close to a wall then easily step to the next one and repeat. They made a big deal of open space in it. The ceilings are very high and everywhere they could have glass or open space they took it.. spaces under each stair, cables instead of walls for the staircases (alternating between horizontal ones for the actual railing areas next to the stairs and vertical ones for the broader angular space under the stairs above) and even a space behind the sinks between the counter and the mirror. The windows are huge! So the view is not spoiled at all. Even the classrooms, labs and offices are full of windows to the hall.. the doors are large windows.. some of the labs even have walls only of glass. There are very nice benches built into the walls at a number of points.. very convenient for students waiting for class! Each floor seems to have a number of fairly secluded spots with tables and chairs for studying, each with its own nice view. There are also some loveseat-like seats that are very neat! At first i thought they were wooden because the seat on them was perfectly flat and the color of wood... the underside of the seat was curved so the whole seat part looked kinda like a wooden segment of lemon or something but not as high... the back of it was wood also... but on closer inspection (and testing) the seat was actually a very soft suede type material. Surprisingly comfortable at that... Finally there is the top floor! There were, I think 5 floors in total including the upper and lower 1st floors as separate. The top floor was not quite finished yet so there was a glass-doored hallway that made a great demonstration for perspective studies ... complete with a double-door-sized opening in the far end... but with no doors .. or floor! It was straight to the outside.. and best of all, had a nice EXIT sign directly above :) Tomorrow i must bring a camera also! There was also something i did not expect at all. There was a small patio area on the side with the view, big glass windows all around as was the custom by this point; it is called The Green Patio! Or something close to that, it was Green anyway.. .and some word like Patio. ANYWAY. Maybe it was the Green Potato. It had a border of polished stones around the edges of the building then paving stones in the middle... then out near the edge of the building were little mounds of some sort of mulch and covering kind of like coarse sand or seeds and plants! The gardens were mounds starting near the door then going out towards the edge of the roof and then making a turn and continuing along the length of the building for quite a ways more than was possible to walk without climbing over another wire fence which kept visitors about 6 feet or so away from the edge of the roof (which was also edged with the border of polished stones). It was really wonderful. Unfortunately since it was morning it was pretty darned cold so i only stayed for a few minutes. The plants they had growing there were mostly fairly plains/desert type plants that were either low and succulent-y or monocot-y. A particularly nice one was a low succulent type one with alternating opposite leaves. It was very small and had little hairs on the leaves. The ones near the entryway were green but the ones that continued out along the long side of the building were red! Very cool. Also, i'm actually listening to Shamandalie by Sonata Arctica now. I thought i was done before but then i wanted to describe my cool trip through the new building xD Current Mood: good | | Thursday, July 9th, 2009 | | 12:32 am |
Okay! Just got an email titled "RE: Diedre wants apartments". Well, i'm pretty sure i would spell my name right if i wanted apartments... and also, i doubt i would title it like that >_> Nice try though! I hope there aren't any people who *would* title it that and actually think that was in reference to something they actually sent. Then again, a professor at URI informed us one time that a student had addressed an email to him with "Yo" and referred to him as "dude" in the same email-- so who knows! Today was a lot of fun.. involving providence and Natural History Museums. Leah and a friend of hers and i all went to the zoo and saw the natural history museum... we walked around in a very lost fashion at first and saw the carousel and other fun things. The japanese garden was bare and sadly neglected looking. There were chunks of algae or plant matter of some kind floating around in the streams to the degree where it looked like a small heard of green, wooly beasts was murdered nearby. Garbage and poorly trimmed bushes and trees were all around and the grass was a very short matted kind, seemingly used as a ground cover to protect from erosion in the unoccupied flowerbeds. It's too bad.. was a nice place. Other stuff.. travel, tamales... Raaaaah.... must sleep, dentist soon. Maybe i'll get to bike to URI tomorrow morning for bagels before dentisting. I want to eat a lot beforehand so i won't starve after drilling renders me incapable of eating for a while. Current Mood: peaceful | | Tuesday, July 7th, 2009 | | 2:33 pm |
Well, this was a very interesting find! Apparently on wiktionary they have lists of ancient greek words by declension! Neat! While browsing through, i find a very amusing definition.. it goes from being perfectly expected to very funny... ἰδιώτης (genitive ἰδιώτου) m, first declension; (idiōtēs) 1. a private person, one not engaged in public affairs 2. (adjectival use) private, homely 3. commoner, plebeian 4. uneducated person, layman, amateur 5. one who is not in the know, an outsider 6. an ignorant person, idiot 7. one who is awkward, clumsy 8. (plural) one's countrymen Hm! The last one almost seems like the punchline at the end of some good buildup xD EDIT: Go here for more wild, greek fun! http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Ancient_Greek_language----- In other news, biking has become easier and is no longer accompanied by agony! Hoorah! Perhaps more about this and about 4th of July (which i accidentally wrote as New Years the first time -_-) because.. well, anyway, showertime! *KERPOW!* Current Mood: pleased | | Monday, July 6th, 2009 | | 12:52 pm |
I feel like such a hippy... today's lunch is as follows: Bread that is full of grains and has the density of fruit leather Greek yogurt with granola, apples and craisins Goat milk And it's daaaaamn tasty! Oh yeah.. and on top it, listening to Dethklok xD I've been introduced to Metalocalypse, a cartoon show that kinda resembles Beavis and Butthead in art and somewhat in plot/style.. but is about a metal band that is so wildly popular that their record sales are the decisive factor in the world's economy. Also, they're cursed. People just die around them.. it's very strange and surprisingly very awesome xD There is an album they've "made" also which... i'm very, very surprised that i like. It features a lot of really silly lyrics (which is great) and growly vocals which i usually hate, but for some reason it's not so offensive on this. Strange! But i won't argue... good is good :D Now that i've established metal/hippy i am, i'll go back to sewing my curtains and drawing plants for my business endeavors :P There's something kinda cool about eating bread where you can see cross-sections of various fruits, nuts and grains. For the first time in what feels like an entire chunk of life it was sunny and pleasant out today. Above 70 and not raining... and all of Wakefield exploded out from it's various hovels and businesses and paraded around in the streets. The first real taste of tourists, hungry for some vacation weather hit the store today-- how do i know? 1. the only jewelry the like is turquoise or coral OR they ask for things related to the beach such as seaglass jewelry or things with anchors and starfish all over... 2. they buy stupid things like 'picket fish' which consist of someone's old picket fence ripped into individual pickets and painted/carved slightly to look like .. well.. fish. i remember making these things when i was little.. they inevitably ended up in the garbage. at 19-22 dollars a pop... well.. i know my grandma used to own things like these; i always liked to imagine that they just appeared or collected there and that no one actually paid for them. i hope the picket fish god doesn't come and smite me after reading my rave reviews on my highly popular and publicized journal. never know with these lesser gods... they always seem to pop out and toss some wild wrath around when you least expect it. i wore my awesome white dress from janeeska today! i've only worn it once before.. for one morning, for a walk by myself when drew was visiting and just the night before i got extremely ill (thanks drew!) and eve disappeared. and also about a week before i left for sweden to visit persons. i really like it a lot... it's a white, cotton dress with various loopy and lightly flowery patterns stitched fairly broadly across the front. On the back it has a drawstring zigzagging up to fit it which is extremely nice and leaves a pretty cool pucker thing in the back. the only trouble with it is that it is EXTREMELY white and while wearing it i am in perpetual fear of getting something on it. Small bug walking on my screen nearish to my text. A girl with a nasty little accessory dog came into purple cow today and bought the necklace i've been looking at for a while... i actually got kinda mad. It looked kinda tacky on her, like it matched her dog or something. Maybe i'm just annoyed that she bought it instead of me... but it was $44.95. So much for jewelry!! It was that bronzy colored metal that some jewelry has with a nice thick linked chain and a t-bar at the FRONT! just under the t-bar was a upward pointing bird with its wings out like swooping in flight, small cut stones were inlaid in a pattern along some of the middle and the edges of the wings and also for the eyes. It sounds really awful, but it had a really nice weight to it and managed to be quite a nice looking piece of jewelry. Clara Beau; Hm... *whew* so much work so often is exhausting. But it's okay. I got to hang out outside for our sidewalk sale which amazingly seemed to give me some slight color on my arms o_O weird. I got to haul things around too, which is good for the exercise and getting healthy thing. In the morning i will be traversing across town, out the other side and to Tiana's house to help clean out the airstream trailer (vintage, may i note.. the badass looking kind) they use as a guest house so they can have people in it for the 4th of July weekend next week. I'll get some pay! And also it will give me something energetic/helpful/productive/fun to do! Yaaay. I did my first raid! It was Karazhan, and honestly, i'd like to go through it again with some people more my own level, or maybe fewer people if that is possible. The whole place was rather neat and the people i went with were fun, but it seemed like a lot of them were distracted with other things.. so it was a bit confusing for me. So either i really couldn't kill stuff... or stuff died before i could attack it (my spells take foreeeeever to cast). I got a really nice mace and an offhand, which is good. Also!! A very nice person gave me an Orb of Deception which allows me to be... well.. really silly looking. Went to the Video Game Zoo where we saw many strange creatures at play. I got to pat an Avalon Code, checked out the list of future exhibits and chat with a Zoo Keeper who is also my friend in her spare time. We fought off marc's opinion that NES was better than SNES and backed it with games... interestingly enough he claims that NES is better because it has more good games while we both argued that SNES was better for the exact same reason. *shrug* Next on the list: Avalon CodeLastly, this evening after getting a lot of food at stop & shop (all of which was on sale so the auto-checkout thing kept saying "saved: x$" after every entry except for one box of frozen green peas and the grapefruit juice) we cooked some frozed pizza and watched Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey! It was really awesome! Amazingly enough, it really wasn't bad at all. Throughout they did some really nice effects and incorporated really entertaining ideas. The whole death thing actually reminds me very distinctly of death in the game i play currently.. and judging from the amount of nods to other fairly modern works found in it... i wouldn't be surprised in the least if it was a nod to this. "If I want some, I’ll get some, when I’m lost in the flotsam and jetsam, I’ll draw some lacoste alligators chasing an opossum... I’m fricking awesome" I find it interesting that my little blue triangle friend feels down about being pensive. Good night! There are stars this evening. Oh!
